About

I'm a writer, artist and award-winning stand-up comedian based in London.

My work explores my experience of being a neurodivergent and mixed-race woman who struggles with feeling both ‘a bit much’ and not enough.

Poetry and Theatre

In 2011 I was selected for the prestigious Barbican Young Poets collective, led by Jacob Sam-La Rose. I performed at venues such as the Barbican Centre and the British Library. After I graduated from the scheme, I joined the Burn After Reading Poetry Collective.

In 2013 I was selected for the National Theatre’s New Views playwriting programme, during which I wrote a short play. In 2014 I was selected for the National Theatre’s Young Studio: Season 6, collaborating with other artists to devise new work.

Stand-up

I’ve been doing stand-up since 2019. Here are some of my credits…

Alex Bertulis-Fernandes was probably the most talented writer of the night, packing her set tightly with smart, elegantly-crafted gags... - Chortle

“Alex’s material’s so prescient at the moment...so many good lines in that set....I laughed a lot...I just thought there was an awful lot of astute material there...and a really great performing style.”

- Sioned Wiliam, Former Commissioning Editor of Comedy for BBC Radio 4

Writing

I’ve written for TV, Film and Radio. Here are some of my credits…

  • Wrote additional material for Jimmy Carr’s tour show (2024) and book (2021)

“Great gags - brilliant eye for detail.” - Jimmy Carr

Art

I’m a visual artist. My response to an art teacher’s suggestion that I ‘dial down the feminism’ went viral.

It was also featured in publications such as Newsweek, TIME Magazine, The Guardian and Dazed.

I was subsequently commissioned to create feminist artwork for The Sunday Times Style.

I’ve also created a series of illustrations depicting my experience of mental illness.
